Mysterious & Historic Liberty

For history and a cozy Downtown Square, look no further than Historic Downtown Liberty. Liberty has played host to several scenes throughout history from James Gang robberies to the imprisonment of Latter Day Saint leader and Prophet Joseph Smith.

Along with the history, Liberty has several local eateries, boutiques, and antique shops that are a great addition to any outing.

Since there’s so much to explore in Liberty, we think visitors need at least a full weekend to really explore. We’ve laid out a three-day itinerary that we think would make for a perfect weekend getaway!

Day One:

  • Visit the Clay County Museum and Archives on the Historic Square to explore their artifacts before checking into your room at Belvoir Winery at 3:00 pm. (30 minutes)
  • Enjoy a wine tasting back at Belvoir before heading out for more of your tour.

Day Two:

  • Grab coffee and breakfast at Hammerhand in Downtown Liberty
  • Visit the Jesse James Bank Museum for your tour at 10:00 am. Here you will see where the James Gang committed the first successful day-time bank robbery during peacetime in American history. (45 minutes)
  • Return to Historic Downtown Liberty and have lunch at a restaurant of your choice.

  • Check out of your room before leaving for the day.
  • Visit the Historic Liberty Jail, where the Latter Day Saint Prophet and leader Joseph Smith and five others were held for fives months during the winter of 1838-1839.
