Equestrian

Clay County has many exciting equestrian opportunities for those seeking an adventure on horseback. The Smithville Lake trail system offers 26 miles equestrian and primitive hiking trails. These scenic trails run from Crow's Creek Campground to Arley, Missouri. This campground offers a designated space designed specifically for campers with horses.

The Crow's Creek Pavilion offer individual stall rentals, group stall rentals, and event rentals. There are a total of 20 stalls in the Crow's Creek Pavilion. It is also available as a 36 x 120 shelter for events.

The Smithville Lake Westward Trailways offer you the unique experience of riding through native prairie grasses while enjoying scenic lake views on the southeast side of Smithville Lake. Another great spot in Clay County for horseback adventures is Watkins Mill State Park. The system offers 3.5 miles of rugged trails that travel through an area of oak-hickory wood land. There are two historic buildings dating back to the 1870's along the trail: Franklin School and Mt. Vernon Church. Your horses can be tied up outside if you wish to explore these historical sites. There is no equestrian camping available at Watkins Mill State Park; however, the equestrian campground at Smithville Lake is a short drive away.
